In Figure 9-1, we can see that the network has two ways for a user on Network A to reach Network C. The Chicago and Phoenix branch offices of Contoso, LTD. are connected to the corporate office by using persistent site-to-site VPN connections that stay connected 24 hours a day. The Windows Server 2003 routers in the Chicago and Phoenix offices are equipped with T1 WAN adapters that have a permanent connection to a local ISP to gain access to the Internet. In today s communications market, many companies would use ADSL or cable modem for these purposes for two reasons: the cost is much cheaper on a recurring monthly basis because the cost of the Internet connection for ADSL or cable modem is less than $100 U.S. per month as opposed to greater than $1,000 U.S. per month for a T1 leased line, and they provide a decent amount of bandwidth at a minimum, equivalent in bandwidth to a dual channel ISDN 128-kilobits per seconds (Kbps) link. It s quite possible that, in order to make a chart intelligible, you will need to adjust its scale or the scaling factor for one or more counters (or both the scale and one or more scaling factors). In particular, you will need to make some kind of adjustment if Performance Monitor represents one or more of your counters as a horizontal line along the top edge of the chart. That s Performance Monitor s way of saying that your data, given its current scaling factor exceeds the highest value of the vertical axis. The following five options represent adjustments that can make the vertical display of performance data more useful. Changing the Vertical Axis Scale To change the scale, right-click the chart or histogram and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. On the Graph tab of the Performance Monitor Properties dialog box, type values in the Maximum and Minimum text boxes. Note that because all of Performance Monitor s many counters return positive values exclusively, you cannot set the minimum scale point to less than 0. On this tab, you can also add horizontal or vertical gridlines, supply a descriptive label for the vertical axis, and give the chart a title.

You can get plugins to make it easy to create graphs from your application, to add tagging functionality to your code, and even to add large chunks of functionality, such as an entire authentication system, to your app. Installing a plugin is even easier than installing a gem. ASP.NET 4 includes many improvements to the HTML rendering engine for web server controls to comply with the latest HTML standards. If you have an existing application written for ASP.NET 3.5 or earlier, and you upgrade it to ASP.NET 4, you will probably never notice a difference in your web browser. If you do experience a problem with how controls render in ASP.NET 4, you can revert to the ASP.NET 3.5 rendering engine by defining the controlRenderingCompatibilityVersion property of the <pages> element in your Web.config file to 3.5.
